Because\nof lack of local studies, it was necessary to taxonomically highlight some\nlocal <em>Mentha<\/em> species, so the aim of this research was to conduct a\ncomparative study of the qualitative and quantitative variations of three local\nspecies of <em>Mentha<\/em>, to find out the distinctive and differentiating\ntaxonomic characteristics for each species. Biometric measurements were taken\nto cover all stages of the plant&#8217;s morphological development including\nflowering and fruiting. The studied traits included 39 qualitative\ncharacteristics and 38 quantitative characteristics. The three studied <em>Mentha<\/em>\nspecies were identified as: <em>Mentha longifolia<\/em>, <em>Mentha piperita<\/em>,\nand <em>Mentha spicata<\/em>. The studied species showed morphological and\nanatomical differences, for instance, the stem was hairy in <em>Mentha\nlongifolia<\/em> and glabrous in the other two species, as well the leaves were\nvelvet on both sides in <em>Mentha longifolia<\/em> and glabrous in the other two\nspecies with the exception of some few and short micro hairs on the margin and\nthe apex of the leaf in <em>Mentha piperita<\/em>, and the leaves were petioled in\n<em>Mentha piperita<\/em> and either sessile or sub sessile in the other two\nspecies, <em>Mentha longifolia<\/em> was unique in the presence of hairs on the\ncorolla, calyx, and flower pedicle. As for the quantitative characteristics, <em>Mentha\nspicata<\/em> possessed the largest diameter of peltate glandular trichome of\n77.55 micrometer, and the largest length of fruity spike of 11.03 cm. The results indicated the variation of the studied species in a number of\nmorphological and anatomical characteristics such as; the shape and dimensions\nof leaves and inflorescences, dimensions of the hairs and glandular trichomes,\nshape of pollen grains, length of polar and equatorial axis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Key words<\/strong>: <em>Mentha longifolia, Mentha piperita<\/em>, <em>Mentha spicata, <\/em>Qualitative characteristics, Quantitative characteristics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Full paper in Arabic: <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/agri-research-journal.net\/sjar\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/v7n5p4.pdf\">PDF<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Abdel Aleem Bello*(1) (1).
