Brucellosis (Malta fever) is prevalent in sheep and goats in the Syrian Arab Republic. It is caused by the bacterium Brucella melitensis and is a leading cause of abortion in sheep. This research aimed to investigate the prevalence of brucellosis in small ruminants in the Rif Dimashq Governorate across different age groups. The study included 231 sheep (Awassi breed) and 181 goats (Shami breed) suspected of infection based on characteristic clinical symptoms. Antibodies to Brucella melitensis were tested using serological tests, the Rose Bengal test (RBT), and indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (i-ELISA). The results showed a prevalence of Brucella Malta infection in sheep and goats tested at 4.32% using the Rose Bengal test and 6.49% using the i-ELISA test. In goats, the prevalence was 3.86% using the Rose Bengal test and 5.52% using the i-ELISA test. The study also revealed a significant variation in prevalence rates among different age groups, with the highest rates observed in the 2-3year age group, reaching 9.67% and 9.23% for sheep and goats, respectively. Significant differences were found between age groups in the prevalence of brucellosis in sheep and goats (P < 0.01). These findings indicate that animals aged 2-3 years are the most susceptible, highlighting the need for preventative vaccination measures before sexual maturity to control this disease.

Keywords: RBT- i-ELISA- Age groups – Brucellosis – sheep and goats.

Full paper in Arabic: PDF

Abdulsattar Alsayed*1 1 Lecturer, in Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Damascus Univ, Syria.(*Corresponding author: Abdulsattar Ali Alsayed, Email: abdulsattar.alsayed@damascusuniversity.edu.sy Phone: 00963940666701) Received: 25/04 /2026 Accepted: 12/07 / 2026 Abstract: Brucellosis is one of the most widespread animal diseases globally and … Continue reading →

[1

post-11776","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-sjar
["GET
